Council for Excellence in Management & Leadership
The
Council for Excellence in Management & Leadership was appointed in April
2000 by the Secretary of State for Education & Employment and the Secretary
of State for Trade & Industry to develop a strategy to ensure that the
UK has the managers and leaders of the future to match the best in the world.
Over the last two years the Council has:
- brought together a wide range of data to support the inquiry
- consulted up to 1000 individuals from both the demand and supply side throughout the UK and from both the public and the private sector
- involved up to 100 individuals from companies of all sizes, the professions, the business schools, FE Colleges, other providers and many intermediary organisations in the seven working and other groups
- conducted and commissioned research, producing 30 reports and working papers
The Council's Achievements...
The Council was asked to look at both management and leadership; to consider
the public and the private sectors;and to look at demand for management and
leadership development - and its supply - through business schools, Further
Education colleges and private providers.
The report published on 13th May highlights the research, thinking and recommendations of the members of the Council, chaired by Sir Anthony Cleaver. It represents the most wide-ranging study ever carried out on the problem of Britain's management and leadership deficiencies. It also introduces the strategy which the Council is recommending to government to tackle the significant mismatch fund between the need for management and leadership skills, and their demand and supply - a strategy whose rationale lies in the explicit link which the Council makes between good management and leadership, and performance.
